Raising Resistance
Campesinos (small farmers) in Paraguay are struggling against the exponential expansion of genetic soy in their country.
‘Raising Resistance’, premiering at the Human Rights Watch Film Festival in London, is a parable about the diversity of plants and cultures, the suppression of life, and about how resistance arises in both people and nature when faced with overwhelming adversity.
Geronimo Arevelos and a group of small farmers stand defiantly in a corporate-owned soy field adjacent to his own, blocking a tractor from spraying herbicides that will decimate his crops and expose nearby families to toxic chemicals. As corporate farms seize farmland and rapidly expand production of genetically modified soy, Geronimo and the campesinos are finding themselves in a struggle for their livelihoods and their lives.
Beautifully shot, and interweaving interviews with scenes from soy fields in Paraguay, ‘Raising Resistance’ is a profoundly human and affecting film that provides no easy answers, yet glimmers with a sense of hope for a better future for all.
‘Raising Resistance’ premieres on Tuesday 27 March 2012 at the Curzon Soho.
