The Limits of Space
Combining art, architecture and science artist David Rickard investigates phenomena such as gravity, alchemy and chance, in his new exhibition at Sumarria Lunn Gallery, London.
Formerly an architect, Rickard tests the limits of a gallery space through his sculptures, drawings and installations. Constantly moving along a fine line between sculpture and performance, art and physics, Rickard’s work engages the viewer as an active player.
Exhibition highlights includ
– Internal Resistance; Rickard arranges 186 spring balance measuring scales to produce a combined load in excess of one tonne within the centre of the space.
– Borderlines; A series of plumb bob weights are suspended on cords of varying length, covered in ink and swung until they strike the limits of the surrounding room.
– Disagreement on the Physical Constraints of Reality; two large concrete beams are suspended along the centre of a corridor space, repeatedly swung back-and-forth until they strike each other and the gallery walls.
David Rickard’s works are on display from Thursday 25 April to Friday 31 May 2013 at Sumarria Lunn Gallery, London, UK.
