Reigning the Fluxus Spirit
To create is to doubt, to doubt is to create. Neither museum or art centre, The Doubt Foundation will open this week in Blois, France.
The Doubt Foundation is an original venue inspired by the Fluxus art movement, created to house discussion, self-expression and a flow of ideas. The title of the foundation refers to founder, Benjamin Vautier’s view that doubt is the artist’s companion, animating and motivating him – “The creative process always unfolds circuitously, in a state of uncertainty, by calling oneself into question and seeking the most appropriate choices.”
The Doubt Foundation explores the uncertainty of creation, providing a place for conversation and questioning of the limits and boundaries of art. The Foundation has a number of facets, holding over 300 works from the Fluxus era of the 1960’s and 1970’s. The courtyard holds Vautier’s Wall of Words (1995), a series of text based paintings that query the viewer with sentences about life, art, doubt, languages and love.
