The Dance of Modern Life
The AW 13/14 collection from Steffie Christiaens looks to the contrast between nature and civilisation, with pieces inspired by contemporary Sufi dancer Ziya Azazi.
The relationship between the environment and society is translated into a clothing collection that combines the warm and sumptuous with the cool and industrial. Rich magentas and golden caramels appear side-by-side with cool steel grey and jet black contrasts. The structure of a tailored jacket is combined with draped panels. Softly rounded jackets are made out of knit, thick wools and dense silk satins.
Christiens looked to Azazi and the ritual of Sufi dancing to create warmth. Rounded volumes in the collection were inspired by Sufi skirts, that appear twisted at the center and furl out as the dancer turns, controlled at a point in the seams.
Steffie Christiaens is from the Netherlands and established her studio in 2010 in Paris, France.
