If we could see the Stars
Since 2010, photographer Thierry Cohen has been devoted to a single project. ‘Darkened Cities’ depicts major cities of the world, as they would appear at night without light pollution.
Cohen’s method in creating these images is precise and methodical. Cohen photographs the world’s major cities, noting the precise time, angle, latititude and longitiude of the exposure. As the world rotates on its axis, he travels to places that have atmospheric clarity, such as the Sahara, and captures the stars as they would have been visible above the city.
Merging the two images, Cohen is able to draw a connection between disparate locations. The resulting images cause us to reconsider the notion of cities that never sleep.
Thierry Cohen was born in Paris in 1963 and is seen as one of the pioneers of digital photography. ‘Darkened Cities’ is on display at Danziger Gallery, New York until Saturday 4 May.
