Luciano Benetton: Imago Mundi
Luciano Benetton’s interest in exploring global cultures has become evident throughout his influence on the Benetton Group and their unique campaigns. Benetton’s art collection project, ‘Imago Mundi’ highlights another side to the Group’s founder and allows him to unite his two passions, travel and art.
The collection is comprised of over 1,000 works of art commissioned and collected by Benetton on his travels. ‘Imago Mundi’ includes works from both established and emerging artists whose only instruction was to create a piece of art that was 10x12cm in size. The collection features pieces acquired in Australia, India, Korea, United States and Japan.
“Imago Mundi is a cultural, democratic and global project that looks to the new frontiers of art –personalities, countries, emerging languages and different cultures – to foster openness towards the world and new horizons, and the coexistence of expressive diversity,” explains Benetton.
Benetton hopes that his collection will become a travelling exhibition and continue to unite cultures as it moves to the various countries whose work it represents.
Imago Mundi’s journey will be on display in Venice, at the Fondazione Querini Stampali as a collateral event of the 55th Venice Biennale from Saturday 24 August until Sunday 27 October 2013.
