Boston Calling: Solange Knowles
As Boston Calling Music Festival approaches, fluoro looks to performing artist Solange Knowles. A musician whose vision goes beyond the realms of music.
The American singer, songwriter is known for her pop and R&B sound that is influenced by the Motown music of the 1960s and 70s. However it is not just music where Solange is making an impact, but also her involvement in the fashion world. Solange’s film clips more closely resemble a fashion campaign, with bright outfits, clashing prints and an eclectic style. The video clip for ‘Losing You’ featured outfits from the Opening Ceremony range.
New York based artist Mickalene Thomas created the album artwork for Solange’s most recent EP ‘True’. The artwork features Knowles’ adorned in her signature vibrant patterned garments, which lend themselves to Thomas’ style.
Best known for her elaborate paintings composing of Swarovski rhinestones, acrylic and enamel, Mickalene Thomas has introduced a complex vision of what it means to be a woman. fluoro spoke with Thomas about her distinct style and dialogue with history.
