Cut Copy: Free Your Mind
Cut Copy’s new album ‘Free Your Mind’ is a pop-infused reference to the cultural practices that have developed in and the club scene.
‘Free Your Mind’ is a diverse mix of the retro beats and electronic pop that Cut Copy is known for. The album draws references from the cultural shifts of the two ‘Summer of Love’ movements that took place in the 1960s and 1980s. Known for their associated explosions of youth culture the movements had an influential impact on the music scene. While the themes of ‘Free Your Mind’ are at the foreground of the completed work, it was never intended as a concept record.
In the lead up to the lead single’s release, of the same name as the album, the group placed billboards displaying the phrase “Free Your Mind” in remote areas of the Californian desert, Chile, Western Australia, Mexico City, Wales and Detroit. Utilising their individual art backgrounds they experimented by communicating “Free Your Mind” as a mysterious slogan of an unidentifiable movement.
The album’s release comes at the time where the impact of 1980s club culture is being reflected through various outlets of contemporary culture. Exhibitions such as the Victoria and Albert Museum’s ‘Club to Catwalk’ highlight the impact of the club and music on fashion and social culture.
‘Free Your Mind’ will be released on Friday 1 November 2013 (Australian Release).
