Rick Owens: Prehistoric
Rick Owens’ collection of furniture is much like his monochromatic and minimal approach to fashion design. The collection is created from rare and unique materials and is currently on display in an exhibition titled ‘Prehistoric’.
Owens displays a demanding and singular aesthetic in fashion. His original vision plays on material, lending itself to the creation of his minimalist style of design. Owens’ penchant for the black and white productions of thirties Hollywood with their sensual and tragic contrasts and values, is translated into his designs. The reconciliation of light and darkness in his work is much like the cinematic masterpieces from this era. While the garment is mobile, fluid and can be shifted and redesigned, furniture is designed to last and fulfil a function. In tandem with craftsmen of the highest caliber, Owens has developed a collection of furniture pieces that express his signature style in cut, volume and plan.
The exhibition brings together a selection of Owens’ furniture pieces. Through his choice of subtle and rare materials Owens suggests the beauty of original nature. Daybeds, seats and dining tables are structured from 500,000 year old fossilised wood and alabaster, a sublime material used by sculptors in Sumerian times. The restricted black and white colour palette confirms the designer’s taste for the monochrome.
Owens cuts and shapes a transversal universe, from fashion to furniture. Prehistoric is on display until Friday 29 November, 2013 at Carpenters Workshop Gallery, London.
