Chanel: Sport Meets Couture
Chanel’s SS14 Haute Couture collection was infused with sportswear. Karl Lagerfeld transformed the Paris’ Grand Palais into the Cambon Club, a contemporary vision of a nightclub with minimalist décor.
Playing with the House’s codes, Lagerfeld mixed the ultimate feminine symbol of couture, the corset, with the ultimate symbol of sportswear – the sneaker. He infused each silhouette with youth, energy and modernity.
The iconic jacket was transformed into a rounded shouldered bolero with 3/4 length sleeves, and the suit became a trompe l’oeil effect bustier dress with widened hips to better accentuate a slim waist – each time embraced in a corset embroidered with stones or sequins.
For evening wear, the long dresses playfully took on transparent embroidered tulle superimposed with lace and sequin patchwork. Becoming more and more fluid, the lines were elongated into trains and embellished with decorated flowers, crystals, feathers or iridescent flickers of material.
