London Fashion Week AW14: A Wrap Up
fluoro reflects on the collections from four key brands from the London Fashion Week AW14 season.
John Rocha continued the traditionally dark theme seen in his previous AW collections. Headpieces, which were also a prominent feature in his AW11 and AW13 collections, once again shone as a key accessory. The neck and head were focal points surrounded by voluminous layers of fabric. The concept of a ruff collar was implied, with the layered on dresses also subtly evoking styles of Elizabethan times.
In contrast to John Rocha’s exaggerated focus on the neck, David Koma’s treatment of this area was refined. A focus on the silhouette was evident throughout the controlled collection, with particular emphasis on the neck and waist. Woven leather panelling and structured A-line skirts heightened the static silhouette. Cut out patterns were featured throughout and added detail to the monochrome palette.
Giles Deacon’s AW14 show brought elements of punk and club culture to the runway. The addition of live music and strobe lights evoked intensity. The collection featured a predominantly black and orange colour palette and the garments ranged from form fitting dresses to oversized knitwear. Lace up boots and leather cut-out gloves ensured the collection was instilled with a sense of grunge.
With models entering the runway through gold-fringed doors, design duo Meadham Kirchhoff brought shine to the season from the outset. The glimmer continued across the garments, which included jackets and skirts constructed from holographic material. A darker touch was brought to the collection by a series of models adorned with black veils. Verging on the kitsch, garments were accessorised with platform Mary Janes and metallic boots.
London Fashion Week will return for the SS15 season on Friday12 September 2014.
