52 Weeks, 52 Cities
Iwan Baan’s photographic project titled ‘52 Weeks, 52 Cities’ takes readers on his one-year journey around the world.
Reputed for his architectural photography, buildings remain at the centre of this personal journey. What Baan reveals is the diverse range of buildings, habitats and structures that signify areas of the world. The sensitive encounters with everyday and extraordinary places all over the globe have been curated by Baan to form a commentary on human living and survival strategies. The project features 52 photographs from the last year accompanied by personal commentaries by the photographer.
Baan fell into the subject of architecture in 2005 when he proposed an idea to Rem Koolhaas, which saw him document a project by Dutch architect firm OMA. The proposal led to his first major project, the documentation of the construction of OMA’s China Central Television (CCTV) building and Herzog & de Meuron’s completed National Olympic Stadium, both in Beijing, China.
Today Baan’s work is characterised by the portrayal of people in the architecture itself and the context, society and environment around architecture. He also works on documentary projects relating to social initiatives such as schools, libraries and community centres in Africa, Asia and Latin America.
An exhibition of the series is currently on display until Sunday 30 March 2014 at Marta Herford Gallery in Herford, Germany. Iwan Baan, 52 Weeks, 52 Cities is also available as a title for purchase from Kehrer.
