Frank Gehry: Biomuseo Panama
After nearly ten years in construction, Panama’s Biomuseo is set the open. The museum was designed by world known architect Frank Gehry and is his first building in Latin America.
Gehry’s design for the building was conceived to represent a story of how the emergence of the Isthmus of Panama changed the history of the planet by creating a barrier between the Pacific and Atlantic oceans about three million years ago. This caused the two regions to evolve ecologically in two strikingly different directions.
Located in Panama City, the Biomuseo will be capable of holding eight exhibitions at any one time. Each gallery will have a large “Device of Wonder” at its centre. These will be major symbolic sculptures or reconstructions, lying at the intersection of art and science and designed to evoke surprise and curiosity. The series of exhibits will recount a particular chapter in the story that the represents.
The Biomuseo will open on Thursday 22 May 2014, joining a series of world-class museums designed by Gehry that include the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, Spain and Vitra Design Museum, Germany.
