29th International Festival of Fashion and Photography
fluoro provides an insight into the key finalists of the 29th International Festival of Fashion and Photography from Hyéres, France.
The International Festival of Fashion and Photography each year showcases emerging creatives from the fields of fashion and photography. Taking place in the modernist Villa Noailles house in Hyéres, France the competition provides the artists and designers with a chance to present their works to a public audience. Previous participants of the festival have gone on to become integral names in their industries include the likes of Viktor & Rolf and Christian Wijnants.
A key selection of creatives taking part in the fashion area of this edition include:
Liselore Frowijn: Afternoon of a Replicant
Based in the Netherlands, Frowijn will present a womenswear collection inspired by Matisse’s paper cutouts. The designer plays with both shapes and colours in a collection where speed, sport and dance constitute the underlying themes.
Marit Ilison: Longing for Sleep
Inspired by the Kaamos period when there is nearly no daylight in Finland, Ilison’s collection is made from thick wool, covered in beautiful patterns. Ilison lives and works in Tallinn, Estonia.
Coralie Marabelle: Dream Catcher
After spending time working for Alexander McQueen in London, Marabelle is now based in Paris. Her collection for the Festival sees Marabelle appropriate the traditional clothes worn by the shepherds of north Iran, applying the styles to womenswear.
Aganese Narnicka: Repair Man
Her collection is inspired by the world of construction sites, the outfits of workmen and architects, the rich diversity of colours and textures. Narnicka lives and works in Riga, Latvia.
Highlights from the photography area include:
Orianne Lopes: Les Mélanies
Lopes’ series reflects her thoughts about the representation of the black female body in white visual culture. In choosing a paradoxical point of view, she aims to challenge the image of African women and the aesthetic and sexual stigmatisation surrounding them.
Marie Rime: Armures
Based in Switzerland, Rime’s work is defined by high-coloured geometry. Her Armures series focuses on women dressed in costumes fashioned from everyday objects.
Osma Harvilahti
Verging on the point of abstraction Harvilahti’s photographs are based on curation of colour and other visual elements. His idea is to tell stories not through drama but simply on the surface of the image.
The 29th International Festival of Fashion and Photography takes place from Friday 25 – Sunday 28 April 2014 at Villa Noailles, Hyéres, France. The works will be exhibited until Sunday 25 May 2014.
