Where Architects Live
Where Architects Live is an original exhibition inspired by leading contemporary architects’ own concepts of the domestic space.
The exhibition has been specially devised for the Salone Internazionale del Mobile and provides an exclusive glimpse into personal spaces designed by eight of the world’s most respected architects. Architects involved are Shigeru Ban, Mario Bellini, David Chipperfield, Massimiliano and Doriana Fuksas, Zaha Hadid, Marcio Kogan, Daniel Libeskind and Bijoy Jain/Studio Mumbai.
It is common to see only the work architects do for other people and for other people’s lives. What is rarely shared are the spaces where architects live. Where Architects Live is a response to these curiosities and aims to broaden the vision of domestic architecture. The exhibition recreates the private spaces of the architects through the use of real-life videos, images, sounds, comments and reconstructions. The result is an interactive exhibition space that unveils the each architect’s vision of living, their choices and their obsessions.
Highlights of the exhibition include Japanese architect and 2014 Pritzker Architecture Prize winner Shigeru Ban’s Tokyo home and Bijou Jain’s space in the Indian village of Alibag. Housed within the Hanegi Forest apartment building and designed by Ban, the main challenge during the design process was to avoid pulling down a single tree in the forest and to build a house around them. While Bijoy Jan’s space escapes the space limitations of the city and is located 30 km from the centre of Mumbai. The space forms a place where Jain lives and works with 60 craftsmen, his home belongs to all, immersed in the Indian countryside.
Where Architects Live is on display from Tuesday 8 – Sunday 13 April 2014 at Pavilion 9 at the Rho Milan Fairgrounds, Milan, Italy.
