Shaping Design at Clerkenwell Design Week 2014
In the midst of Clerkenwell Design Week we take a look into the countries that have significantly helped shape the world of design and the key designers that represent each nation at the iconic UK design event.
Italy
Known for the depth of its design heritage, Italy is well represented at this year’s Clerkenwell Design Week by a range of designers displaying a selection of high-end lighting and furniture. Poltrona Frau Group, a leader in the furniture design industry is a spokesman throughout the world for the values associated with the design and production of Italian-made goods. It will bring its recent Milan showcase to the UK for the first time. Another notable inclusion is furniture manufacturer Arper, who will celebrate its 25th anniversary at the event.
Scandinavia
The Nordic location is represented by lightness, a key element seen throughout the collections at this year’s event. Known for experimenting with materials, shapes and techniques, Iran-born, Swedish architect and designer Hanieh Heidarabadi is presenting their 3D printed Make Lamp at the event. This high-tech theme continues with Finland-based design studio Get Bli Designs, which will debut its new line of lighting and jewellery.
Spain and Portugal
The significance of innovative and striking architecture throughout Spain and Portugal is reflected in a new collection from Vibia. The Barcelona-based lighting company has partnered with designer Arik Levy, to launch Wireflow, a lighting range with a strong architectural feel that is highlighted by its linear shapes and three-dimensional geometries.
USA and Canada
Home to many iconic designers across furniture and product design, the North American exhibitors have brought innovation to the event. One notable highlight is Canadian designer Loïc Bard, who is exhibiting in the UK for the first time. He is showcasing his Tokyo collection, which was inspired by his childhood in Japan and the simplicity of traditional Japanese design.
Clerkenwell Design Week continues until Thursday 22 May 2014 at locations throughout Clerkenwell in London, England.
