PHotoEspaña 2014: 17th edition
PHotoEspaña International Festival of Photography and Visual Arts returns to the Spanish capital of Madrid for its 17th edition.
Marking a new period for the Festival, the exhibition programme of PHotoEspaña for 2014 explores geographic areas, rather than the conceptual themes that have been explored in past editions. PHotoEspaña 2014 will focus on Spanish photography, highlighting its richness, energy and sheer variety through a survey from the earliest days of photography right up to today.
The 17th edition of the Festival presents exhibitions by over 440 artists, with 70% hailing from Spain. See below for a selection of fluoro’s picks of the exhibitions on display throughout PHotoEspaña.
Photography and Modern Architecture in Spain, 1925 – 1965
The result of ongoing research, the exhibition provides the first explicit examination of the role played by photography in Spanish modernist architecture. The exhibition strips the photographs of their context and purpose, in order to appraise them in their own right from the standpoint of photography.
Ten Photographers from Latin America
Bringing together works from 10 different Latin American artists, the exhibition focuses on works that suggest stories, draw attention to unknown figures or explore facts that often go unnoticed. Marlos Bakker looks at the car as a place of apparent privacy where the driver is nonetheless exposed, while Stefan Schmeling tours the watchtowers of São Paulo, Brazil. Taking a more personal approach Gustavo Rodrigues Lacerda takes exquisite portraits of albinos in Brazil.
Lillian Bassman: Brushstrokes
A survey of the work of one of the leading figures in the history of fashion photography, this exhibition pays tribute to the charismatic figure of Lillian Bassman, two years after her death. The exhibition Brushstrokes provides an introduction to the unique and prolific work of a woman who, heedless of the rules of photography, used the medium to give free rein to her creativity. Bassman’s pictures reveal a natural interaction of the models with their clothes.
PHotoEspaña takes place in Madrid, Spain and runs until Sunday 27 July 2014.
