Vhils: Dissection
Marking his first solo show at a major institution, Portuguese artist Vhils (Alexandre Farto) explores the urban environment in his exhibition Dissection.
Held at the Electricity Museum in the Portuguese capital of Lisbon, the exhibition presents a diverse selection of Vhils’ work from his carved walls and vinyls, to film footage and canvas works. It also features a new body of work from the artist that has been created specifically for the museum’s space.
Looking to the issues found within contemporary cities, the exhibition’s title refers to Vhils’ approach to exploration and his many projects across the globe. Vhils looks beyond surface layers and reveals elements of the walls he works on as he brings light to societal issues.
fluoro spoke to Vhils in 2013 about the connection he holds to the cities whose buildings he transforms. “My work offers a reflection on life in the urban environment and the model of global development that is making cities and people worldwide increasingly uniform,” he said. This relationship to the urban environment remains true in Vhils’ current body of work, as he continues to explore the history of cities and those who inhabit them.
Dissection is on display at the Electricity Museum in Lisbon, Portugal until Sunday 5 October 2014.
