New York Fashion Week: SS15 So Far
As day five of New York Fashion Week SS15 Ready to Wear concludes, we look to the designers that have captured our attention so far. The collections have ranged from the minimal to the vibrant, with an abundance of floral patterns marking the change of season.
Carmen Marc Valvo
To celebrate the 25th anniversary of his label, Carmen Marc Valvo presented his first venture into menswear. The collection was energetic and fun shifting from floral swimming trunks to jacquard jackets, then to a more formal range of garments, which focused on crisp white shirts with sheer panels. The American designer retained his womenswear collection, and united both collections with the use of matching patterns; applying them to men’s pants and women’s dresses.
Parkchoonmoo
A minimal palette marked the SS15 Ready to Wear Parkchoonmoo collection, for a season that is traditionally noted for colour and pattern. The spring energy was achieved through the details of the collection rather than its palette. A balance of sheer and structured fabrics allowed the garments to hang loosely over the models. The Korean designer also incorporated elements from sportswear, pairing bomber jackets with culottes and incorporating mesh panels to an array of garments.
Carolina Herrera
A feminine collection that was defined by the digital, Carolina Herrera’s SS15 Ready to Wear collection retained the designer’s style while bringing a sense of the new. The colour palette was rich, with a selection of deep reds, shades of beige and a light yellow. With digital visuals applied to garments and centred on flowers, the individual images were treated in a variety of ways, from deconstruction to distortion.
Dennis Basso
Like Herrera, Dennis Basso SS15 Ready to Wear collection captured floral elements. His approach however was softer than Herrera’s. A number of dresses were adorned with fabric flowers to create bodices, while others were embellished with beaded elements. A selection of more adventurous garments paired short sparkling playsuits with a light fur jacket. Basso dedicated his collection to the late Joan Rivers through a minute of silence at the beginning of the show.
