Tom Evangelidis: Façade
Photographer Tom Evangelidis’ series titled Façade, captures the architectural styles that define diverse cities around the globe.
Shot in Prague, Bucharest, Hanoi, St Petersburg, Sofia, Istanbul and Havana over a 10-year period, Façade documents an eclectic mix of architectural eras from the gothic beauty of the 13th century, the ornate decadence of the 18th century and the austere classicism of the Communist era in the 20th century.
Evangelidis’ body of work rejects the often candy-coated way that architecture is often documented in favour of a style. As a photographer, Evangelidis is fascinated by the evolution of architecture and its intricate links with politics, culture and class. He approaches major public installations with the same respect as he would humble, ramshackle homes to show the understanding of their equality and importance in documenting the progression – and decline – of history.
Growing up in the northern beaches of Sydney, Australia, Evangelidis made his debut as a fashion photographer in London in the early 1990s. Twelve years ago, Evangelidis shifted his focus to interior design and lifestyle photography, simultaneously travelling the world to pursue his passion for architecture.
Façade is currently on display in Melbourne, Australia at Edmund Pearce Gallery until Saturday 27 September 2014. A title of the same name as the exhibition is available, documenting the series within a hardcover release.
