Galeria Patricia Cornish
Patricia Cornish chose São Paulo, Brazil as the South American location to open her gallery in 2013. Her space, which brings together her love of British art with her Brazilian heritage, sees artists from the two countries represented.
Since her childhood excursions to exhibitions in São Paulo with her mother – where she was raised –Cornish has held an interest in art. It was not until years later, while living in London, that Cornish perused her love of art. She undertook a curatorship course at Central Saint Martins and upon completion realised her ability to combine her business skills with her love of art.
The growth of Galeria Patricia Cornish is attributed to her passion and her willingness to keep an open mind to learning from a diverse range of industries and colleagues. Through private viewings, meetings with artists and participating in Brazilian Art Fairs, Cornish established an understanding of the Brazilian art market. Being accepted into the Brazilian Art Fair during her first year of operation was a pivotal moment for her establishing a good start in São Paulo.
The artists on Cornish’s books range from British post war art to contemporary Brazilian artists. Initially Cornish solely represented British artists, but as she learnt more about the local talent she realised their potential. Photographer Marcela Faé is one of the Brazilian artists represented by Cornish. Faé brings a unique style to the gallery, with work that ranges from fashion photography to more sensual portrait series. While British Illustrator Damien Weighill – another of the artists represented by Cornish – brings another aesthetic language to her gallery. Weighill has worked with brands such as adidas, Nokia and Cadbury.
While Cornish does not currently represent any street artists, she highlights that the genre is a unique part of the Brazilian art scene and culture. In Brazil, street art allows a merge and constant dialogue between contemporary art and street art.
Galeria Patricia Cornish is based in São Paulo and also runs pop-up exhibitions in London..
