Martin Schoeller: Portraits
From Hollywood stars, to music royalty, the standard portrait has never been the same after renowned portraitist Martin Schoeller placed his creative spin on the classic style of photography.
In his 15-year career he has captivated audiences worldwide with his re-visioning work and it will now be featured as a major retrospective, titled Portraits at the Hasted Kraeutler in New York.
The retrospective is set to coincide with Schoeller’s release of Portraits (teNeues, 2014), which is a monumental monograph spanning more than one decade of his work. The retrospective will feature his classic black-and-white and colour portraiture that has consistently captured characters we think we know, in ways we couldn’t predict.
Schoeller’s style, which is informed by an inimitable compositional theme, creates mesmerising portraits that are as daring as they are exacting, playful and precise, and this style has lamented him as one of today’s preeminent portraitist. He creates a scene, in each portrait, that feels both candid and staged for the viewer, by giving a slant and glimpse to his vision of the subject in his photos.
To compliment Schoeller’s retrospective, a written introduction by American artist Jeff Koons will be featured at the exhibition, focusing on how his latest monograph is a cause for celebration and a true milestone moment for the artist.
The retrospective will run from Thursday 13 November 2014 to Saturday 3 January 2015 Hasted Kraeutler, New York.
