British Explorers: Ilia Petrovic and Paul Wright
Redeeming the importance of paintings as an artistic expression and resisting the lure of video, multiples and photography in international contemporary art, Ilia Petrovic and Paul Wright make a statement in an exhibition titled British Explorers.
Curated by Patricia Cornish, the exhibition features more than 30 oil and mixed media paintings by British artists Petrovic and Wright. All pieces focus on the uniqueness of character that the paintings as artworks display in a contemporary art scene permeated by technology and new media. Both artists employ a unique style that is their own, allowing for the viewing public to enjoy the best of British artistry allied with a defiant and contemporary feel from two artists at the forefront of the international art world.
Petrovic’s distinctive mixed technique to yield three-dimensional effects on canvas has seen his work become a part of private collections in the United States, Australia, Dubai, France and Russia. He draws inspiration for his art from microscopic insects, birds, cosmology, music and dance. One of his paintings was recently added to an exclusive collection at the London based Bulgari Hotel.
Wright, a finalist in the 2014 BP Portrait Award, employs a technique that not only captures the essence of those he immortalises in painting, but to also use his sensibility to capture the personality and vitality of the people he portrays. His style offers an ambiguous psychological portrait of the sitter that makes it impossible for the viewer to really understand what goes on in the minds and souls of the people he paints.
The work of Wright and Petrovic is featured in a number of distinguished international galleries from the likes of the iconic Cork Street galleries, a “hub” of the arts world that held the first vernissage of great masters such as Francis Bacon, Max Ernst, Paul Klee and Joan Miró.
British Explorers is currently exhibiting in the British Brazilian Centre in São Paulo, Brazil. The exhibition will conclude on Sunday 22 February 2015.
