The Emerging Sound of Jacob Collier
Young, London-based musician Jacob Collier is working his way into the minds and hearts of a growing audience. His exceptional fusion of jazz, folk, acapella, trip-hop, classical, Brazilian grooves, gospel, and soul make a unique sound that is becoming known as the Jacob sound.
Collier, who was born into a family of musicians and a world full of continuous music-production, started composing his own music from his earliest years with no formal music training. At the age of eight, he started taking singing lessons, which opened the doors for him to numerous music performance and acting opportunities across Europe and the UK.
The experiences derived from these years fuelled Collier’s own musical development and his unique sound, which was created using his voice, his hands and the instruments around him.
At 14, an award-wining Collier joined the Royal College of Music Junior Department as a composer leading to further opportunities in the world of music, such as collaborating with the London School of Contemporary Dance on a music piece. Growing a passion for bass and jazz, Collier then joined the Royal Academy of Music Junior Jazz as a pianist and the Purcell School in 2010 to study composition, jazz piano and voice. Around this time Collier started sharing his music on YouTube, which won him a huge audience from all corners of the globe.
As Colliers talent continues to spread through digital media, he is working on an album to capture his musical exploration and unique sound.
