JonOne: Staring to the Stars
JonOne presents Staring to the Stars, a solo exhibition that was inspired by his love for the city of Shanghai.
JonOne’s journey of street art began at an early age, when he was exposed to New York’s 80’s burgeoning graffiti scene. Since then, he has exhibited his artwork across Europe becoming a leading figure in the world of street art with a style that differs to that of other artists. By balancing form and shade, he creates powerful artworks with a style founded in abstract art, a unique calligraphy that echoes Chinese calligraphy, as well as an exceptional talent for colour configuration.
As a key artist in the exhibition Born in the Streets at the Fondation Cartier in Paris, his works were also displayed in Milan, Shanghai, Paris, Bologna, Los Angeles, Tokyo and New York in some of the most prominent spaces. This includes his large-scale canvas for the French National Parliament titled Liberté, Egalité, Fraternité [Freedom, Equality, Brotherhood], which he created as a tribute to the motto of the French Republic.
After being awarded the French Légion d’honneur in January 2015, JonOne now returns to Shanghai, a city he loves, to perform a series of drawings and paintings in artistic residence for this special exhibition. Shanghai forms an intense experience for JonOne as he was among the first artists to exhibit at Magda Danysz’s first space on The Bund in Shanghai in 2009, and often returns to the city for inspiration. Through an outburst of intense colours, JonOne expresses his deepest feelings and invites the viewer to live the experience of discovering the strong immensity of the megapolis, Shanghai, in a new and exciting way.
Staring to the Stars will be on display from Friday 10 July to Monday 31 August 2015 at Magda Danysz Gallery in Shanghai, China.
