TOG: Flagship Store
Furniture brand TOG has opened its first flagship store in São Paulo, Brazil.
TOG brings together the best of industrial technology and craftsmanship to develop products characterised by high quality and customisability. Embedding collaboration and play into its business model, TOG makes designers, artists, artisans, industrialists and end-users creators, together.
Triptyque Architecture designed the store under the art direction of Philippe Starck who has created a range of furniture for TOG. Designed as a mixed use space for sociability where customers can purchase, eat, drink, read, create and spend time, the store assimilates a 21st century edition of the Andy Warhol Factory. The store is intended to function as a major conviviality and social hub where customers can be inspired by a series of pop up activities. These include everything from courses in entrepreneurship, branding and innovation to a barbershop, tattoo studio, arts and crafts demonstrations, DJ sessions, and gastronomic gatherings.
To anticipate these and other potential uses, Triptyque Architecture neutralised the existing old games club from the 80s, painting the walls white. Like TOG furniture, the space is fully customisable and created to allow for the organic spaces to change over time. The store has no walls between ambiances and the use of materials such as glass enhances the multiple-use desired for the space. A contrast forms between the existing walls’ roughness and the completely new ground. Concrete beams are visible from the ceiling, with suspended lights across the space.
Referring to the furniture Starck noted at last year’s Salone del Mobile where TOG launched, “The only way to see life is no more trends […] The only trend that is acceptable is freedom, freedom to be different, freedom to choose what you want.” The new store reflects this freedom perfectly, and reinforces TOG’s purpose as an open source, community driven furniture brand.
