Alexander Wang: London Flagship Store
Alexander Wang’s first European flagship store has opened in London.
The London flagship store is Wang’s first initiative since he made his departure from Balenciaga as the House’s Creative Director and forms not only Wang’s first in Europe, but also his largest one to date. Located in a former postal office, the store covers about 7,000 square feet across three levels and houses the complete range of Wang’s ready-to-wear collections, T by Alexander Wang, accessories collections as well as the OBJECTS collection.
The interior design was carried out in collaboration with Belgian architect Vincent van Duysen who has previously designed stores and spaces for Aesop, Calvin Klein Jeans, Selfridges and La Rinascente. According to the architect, the design of a store allows for more theatrical exploration and is similar to creating a stage where the clothes are the central characters.
Together with Wang, van Duysen created a minimalistic, utilitarian look and feel, with an emphasis on textures and materials. This same style is also associated with Wang’s own design across fashion.
The historical structure and traditional architecture of the building is contrasted with an interior that features a range of less traditional, unexpected, materials including rubber, distressed chrome and embossed leathers.
The store’s interior showcases a range of geometric grids of silver travertine columns, beams and in-wall niches in matte black rubber. In contrast to these sharp structures, elegant, curved and continuous chrome tubes form display fixtures marked by a black rubber-effect metal coating, which is seen across all cabinetry.
Custom-designed furniture by Wang for Poltrona Frau is allocated across the space alongside renewed versions of 1970s Italian design by Gianfranco Frattini by Tacchini, and sculptural works by Belgian designer Ben Storms and Belgian artist Gerard Kuijpers.
The Alexander Wang London flagship store is located at 43-44 Albemarle Street in Mayfair, London, United Kingdom.
