100% Design: South Africa
For their 100% Design London debut, South Africa have presented an exhibition that explores the country’s most prevalent design aesthetics.
Titled ‘Framework’, the South African Pavilion places a strong emphasis on furniture. The exhibition highlights that while there are an array of emerging talents, there is still a focus on traditional technique.
A selection of the designers on display include:
-Indigi Designs: The design group is displaying their contemporary geometric table design, titled ‘Facet’. They also place an emphasis on giving back to the community and have established a program to offer local women a source of employment.
– Wiid Design: With a focus on handmade elements and detail, Wild Design creates products that explore the idea of luxury in a country where first and third worlds meet. He is presenting his Continental Poodle Stool.
– Joe Paine: A designer and producer from Johanneseburg, Paine’s planter series include a candle holder and are influenced by the hanginging Gardens of Babylon.
– George Hay: Blending the roles of art and design, Hay combines two passions considering himself a ‘furniture sculpture’.
The South African Pavilion is on display as part of the International Pavilions series at 100% Design London until Saturday 21 September 2013.
