Klo: False Calls
Music duo, cousins Simon Lam and Chloe Kaul (aka Klo) have released their second single.
Titled False Calls, the single features a strong beat paired with light vocals. The track’s production has seen the pair achieve a soundscape that is both textured and clean, while celebrating Kaul’s soulful vocals. Lam is already a well-known figure in the Australian music scene from his role as vocalist and drummer of with Melbourne trio I’lls. He is also a noted audio-engineer and producer. In contrast, Klo has been an introduction of sorts for Kaul.
“This track was an icebreaker for us cousins, as we weren’t close before this project and hadn’t seen each other in years. It was our collective mothers’ decision for us to collaborate and strengthen family ties,” said the duo.
“The finished product sounds nothing like the first draft. It was messy and incoherent, but we managed to arrange it as we learnt to combine our two producing styles. The main idea of the track is loss of identity, which funnily enough came about after witnessing a drunken idiot. We expected it wasn’t leaving the bedroom studio, hence the lo-fi tape samples and degraded voice loops. Being our first track we put together, it’s a bit special to us.”
False Calls is taken from Klo’s debut EP to be released late 2014 via Dot Dash.
