Poetic (Days) Weekend
Melbourne’s Footscray Community Arts Centre will host two days of poetry, workshops and film in a celebration of the written and spoken word in an event titled Poetic (Days) Weekend.
The event will bring together written word artists from Australia and around the globe. Highlights include:
Anis Mojgani
The two-time US National Poetry Slam Champion returns to the Footscray Community Arts Centre after selling out his only Melbourne show in 2013. Mojgani will host a workshop aiming to aid small groups in refining their poetry and performance. He will also partake in the One Night Stanza II (see below), which alsotakes place during Poetic (Days) Weekend.
One Night Stanza II
The event will bring together a selection of spoken word artists, accompanied by Spoken Word DJ and Producer LAPKAT. Hosted by Anis Mojgani One Night Stanza II will include performances from Buddy Wakefield (USA), Amal Kassir (USA), Miles Merril (Sydney), Helen Kassir (Melbourne) and Jessie Giles (Melbourne).
Zajal – The Art of the Poetic Duel
A preview screening of documentary Zajal – The Art of the Poetic Duel explores the poetic duel art form. The artform originated in the Middle East and has since resurfaced in contemporary forms such as spoken word and poetry slams and battle rap. The film was produced and directed by Sarah McDonald.
Poetic (Days) Weekend takes place at Footscray Community Arts Centre on Friday 22 and Saturday 23 August 2014.
