Farid Rasulov: Dogs in the Living Room
A debut solo exhibition titled Dogs in the Living Room follows on from Azerbaijani artist Farid Rasulov’s involvement in the 55th Venice Biennale. It will focus on exploring emergent cultures.
An installation will consume the floor and ceiling of Paris’ Galerie Rabouan Moussion space with traditional Azerbaijani carpet. Transforming the gallery space, the carpets become the subject themselves. The destination of an ornament, whether carved or painted, is to beautify an object. Through this installation, Rasulov questions the notion of contemporary art’s traditional white cube. The role of the fabric here is not to maintain the functional but to be there to confront West and East.
Meaning is injected into the carpets as the traditional patterns represent signs of a changing country, a region of Soviet Union dissolved and torn between tradition and modernity, East and West.
Born in Shusha, Azerbaidjan Rasulov’s diverse background saw him initially embark on a career in Medicine. However in 2007 he enlisted in a contemporary art degree, a decision that led him to participate in the 55th Venice Biennale.
Dogs in the Living Room will be on display at Galerie Rabouan Moussion in Paris from Saturday 6 September – Saturday 11 October 2014.
