Abstract: The Innocence of the Eye
A group show titled Abstract highlights the innocence of the eye when viewing contemporary non-figurative art.
Austrian born art historian Ernst Gombrich uses the phrase “the innocence of the eye” to highlight that whenever a viewer looks at a figurative painting what they see depends on their prior knowledge, and is therefore not an innocent view. This differs to when viewing a non-figurative artwork that takes unfamiliar shapes and forms – the experience is new and not influenced by prior vision.
The artworks in Abstract play to this concept of the innocent. From bright geometric works to pieces that are dark and moody, the artworks leave the interpretation to the viewer. The artists on display include .
