Jean Paul Gaultier: A Vision of the World we Wish to Live in
The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk has arrived in Melbourne, Australia and with it brings “a vision of the world we wish to live in.”
Since it’s inception in 2011, 1.2 million people have visited the exhibition. Before coming to Melbourne, the exhibition visited London and will, in 2015 travel to Paris.
Jean Paul Gaultier, a pioneer in the fashion world takes his focus and passion on the ‘difference’ onto his pieces and the bodies he has chosen over the decades to represent his brand. His fascination started from a young age as he began to notice people who were breaking the mold. His attraction continued as he branched into fashion and became a prominent voice in the industry.
“Fashion is something lively that is changing in movement all the time,” Gaultier said.
Known for launching the career of Transgender model Andreja Pejic, Gaultier doesn’t shy away from his openness with gender, race, size or colour. He offers a free mind to the diversity in the human kind, and in the way he views fashion. Pejic, who was in Melbourne shares a high regard for Gaultier and was quoted by fluoro saying “I owe a lot to Jean Paul Gaultier for being one of the first [designers] to take a risk by letting me be me and tell my story.”
Since stepping away from Ready to Wear, 62-year-old Gaultier’s focus has shifted to working with Haute Couture, a practice that has shaped his life and is a focus of the exhibition. The exhibition itself brings Haute Couture and Ready to Wear pieces to life, making them accessible for public view. The Melbourne exhibition also includes a notable space that offers visitors a unique look at Gautier’s connection to Australia.
The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk, officially opens today at the National Gallery of Victoria. It will remain open until Sunday 8 February 2015.
