Pop to Popism
From images of Marilyn Monroe, to Andy Warhol’s iconic Triple Elvis, pop art stormed through the creative world from the 1950s to the 1980s. Now for the first time in Australia, this iconic style of art has been given a well-deserved exhibition spanning three decades of growth, chronicling its influence on the contemporary art world we know today.
Curated by the Art Gallery of New South Wales, the exhibition has been dubbed Pop to Popism and brings with it over 200 works of art from over 70 of pop’s greatest artists from around the world.
Focusing on the crucial role pop art has played in turning the creative world upside down, the exhibition will feature work from Britain and America in the 1950s as it emerged in popularity; pop art that was produced in the late 1970s and 1980s by younger artists (Popism) and finally Australian artists during the 1960s and early 1970s (OZ Pop).
As the exhibition is a first of it’s kind in Australia, it will not only feature images from the likes of pop art icons like Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein, but will also feature works from Australian pop artists along with their international peers, to highlight the development and reception of Australian art within the broader pop art narrative.
The exhibition will run until Sunday 1 March 2015 at the Art Gallery of New South Wales.
