Erwin Blumenfeld: A Retrospective
The first exhibition in France to be entirely devoted to iconic photographer Erwin Blumenfeld is set to open at the Jeu de Paume, Paris. The retrospective explores a lifetime of his work.
Much of the exhibition is devoted to Blumenfeld’s time as a sought-after fashion and advertising photographer, working for Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar. These photos show Blumenfeld’s continuing fascination with photographic experiments, revealing the extent to which his commercial work drew on the methods and techniques of his earlier artistic black-and-white photography.
While Blumenfeld has become predominantly known for his fashion photography, particularly his covers for Vogue, this exhibition also highlights Blumenfeld’s artistic side. The exhibition brings together over 200 works from the late 1910s to the 1960s, and encompasses the various media, such as drawing, photography, montages and collage explored by the artist throughout his career.
‘Erwin Blumfeld: Photographs, drawings and photomontages’ is on display from Tuesday 15 October 2013 until Sunday 26 January 2014.
