MoMu Museum Explorer
The Fashion Museum of Antwerp (MoMu) have unlocked their vast fashion archives through an interactive wall that gives the public unlimited access to their archived content.
The concept of the MoMu Museum Explorer was initiated by Studio Dos Santos. Under their supervision, MoMu assigned digital developers Lab101 to set up a resourceful team and work on the creative and technical challenges of bringing the interactive wall to life.
While Lab101 coded the software, Holocube built the hardware leading to a wall that allows for 80 simultaneous touches and high quality viewing across a physical area of 10 square meters.
In the wall’s development, Lab101’s main focus was to enable quick and explorative interactions. The result is an interactive smart screen wall, which allows visitors to explore and immerse in former exhibitions and information through the swipe of a hand. More than 1,000 items have been made available through a set of tags, which makes the process of exploration effortless and fun for the public.
To increase accessibility, and reach a large audience, the wall was created outside the museum making it available during closed hours.
While most museums have considerable parts of their collections locked away in large archives, MoMu has transformed a common weakness to a key strength by digitally unlocking the hidden content. With the MoMu Museum Explorer, MoMu has not only revolutionised museum exploration but have also ensured their gallery remains progressive in a manner that complements the museum’s physical space and exhibitions.
