Cinelli: ‘in bike we trust’
The release of The Art and Design of the Bicycle is an illustrated journey through sixty-five years of work by one of the most pioneering and influential names in bicycle design: Cinelli.
The publication highlights the brand that became Cinelli, from its inception in 1948 (founded by Cino Cinelli) through to its handover in 1978 (to Antonio Colombo) right through to its numerous collaborations. The brands’ contribution to bicycle design is a combination of design, beauty and innovation.
Iconic fashion designer Sir Paul Smith is both featured and a contributor, recognising that Cinelli’s worl-leading collaborations have touched on fashion, art and design. Notable partnerships have seen Mike Giant apply his expertise in tattoo art to create a limited edition handlebar (pictured) and artist Keith Haring apply his signature style to the Laser’s disc wheels (pictured).
Cino Cinelli began making frames in Italy in the 1940’s, after retiring from a successful professional racing career. Cinelli put his knowledge to the craft of bicycle design, employing his intuitions gained from racing. His contributions to modern cycling include the innovation of the first aluminium handlebars and the first pedal straps, which have led the Cinelli brand to become one of the most pioneering and influential names in bicycle design.
