The World of Jean Paul Gaultier
The first international exhibition of Jean Paul Gaultier’s work has travelled to New York. ‘The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk’, presents an overview of the innovation and craftsmanship of Gaultier’s creations.
Gaultier’s reputation for witty and daring designs and a ceaseless interest in society, identity, and beauty has earned him a place in fashion history. Gaultier’s avant-garde designs demonstrate a deep understanding of the issues and reoccupations of today’s multicultural society. For inspiration, Gaultier has turned to a variety of cultures and countercultures.
The exhibition can be viewed as more of a theatrical show than an ordered retrospective, with Gaultier’s own input into the design. The exhibition explores key themes that are unique to Gaultier. His trademark inclusions of religious iconography, sailors and mermaids all feature, including his very first design.
Collaborations with contemporary artists and photographers also feature heavily throughout the exhibition. Gaultier has worked with the likes of Andy Warhol, Richard Avedon, David LaChapelle, Pierre & Gilles, Herb Ritts and Cindy Sherman. Gaultier has also collaborated with numerous filmmakers, choreographers and pop icons and a selection of his costume designs are presented.
‘The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk’ is on display at the Brooklyn Museum, New York until Sunday 23 February 2014.
