Robert Indiana: Beyond Love
Highlighting another side of an artistic icon, an exhibition of Robert Indiana’s work revisits the American dream of the 1960s.
Indiana’s Signature image ‘Love’ become an icon, so much so that its original message and attempts to question and raise debate were overshadowed. Looking to the other works in Indiana’s collection, what emerges is an exploration of the complex issues facing humanity, not only the power of love, but also death, sin and forgiveness.
The exhibition titled ‘Robert Indiana: Beyond Love’, captures this vision, highlighting the true power of Indiana’s works and reminding us that there is more to his repertoire than ‘Love’. Using type and the vocabulary of America highway signs as his tools, Indiana’s work is a bold vision of American identity of the time.
‘Robert Indiana: Beyond Love’ is on display until Sunday 5 January 2014 at Whitney Museum of American Art, New York.
