Venice Biennale: Lawrence Weiner
Venice’s transportation system will be a vehicle for art by Lawrence Weiner, as his work immerses the city for the duration of the Venice Biennale.
Titled ‘The Grace of A Gesture’, Weiner’s work forms the centerpiece of an exhibition organised by the Written Art Foundation. It is presented on the ground floor of the Palazzo Bembo near the Rialto Bridge. The work explores how today’s culture reacts to the challenges of script and image.
In addition to the exhibition ‘The Grace of a Gesture’ will be installed on five Venetian Vaporetto boats. The boat will transport the work through the Canal Grande, the Arsenale, the Giardini and beyond. The work will be shown in ten different languages ranging from Chinese to Japanese to Arabic to Hebrew, highlighting the global aspect of the Venice Biennale.
Seen as one of the founders of the Conceptual Art movement Weiner views himself as a sculptor, using words as his tool, he relies on language to visualise the creation of his works of art.
Weiner’s ‘The Grace of A Gesture’ will be on display until Sunday 24 of November in the Palazzo Bembo and on the Venetian Vaporetti boats.
