Audi, Volkswagen and Poltrona Frau: Innovation United
Walter de Silva, Head of Volkswagen Group Design, has joined forces with the Audi Concept Design Studio in Munich to create an armchair for Italian furniture maker Poltrona Frau.
The project lead by de Silva saw the creation of an armchair called ‘Luft’ – the German word for ‘air’. ‘Luft’ combines the expertise of three partners united by their passion for design, quality and perfection.
“The unique thing about this project is the fusion of Poltrona Frau’s invaluable handcrafting expertise with the research, the experimental approach and the conceptual methods of Audi design,” explained Walter de Silva. His goal was to achieve the perfect balance between craftsmanship and high-tech.
A curved aluminium element – symbolising Audi’s lightweight construction – lends the armchair its weightless appearance. The elegant shape of the chair and its lightweight material, allows the seating area to appear to float in the air. The covering is made from soft, premium-quality Pelle Frau® leather.
The production of the designer piece follows two years of extensive research.
