Exploring Melbourne Now

An intersection of Melbourne creatives, explores the idea of a city being significantly shaped by the artists, designers and architects who live and work in its midst. fluoro gives an insight into the largest project to date for the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV), titled ‘Melbourne Now’.

The exhibition reflects the complexity of Melbourne and its unique and dynamic cultural identity, considering a diverse range of creative practice as well as the cross-disciplinary work occurring in Melbourne today.

Some of the highlights from fluoro’s visit include:

  • Patrick Pound, ‘The Gallery of Air’: Pound has created a gallery based on the theme of air, pulling together artworks and objects from the NGV collection, the result is a contemporary wunderkammer.
  • Anastasia Klose, One Stop Knock-Off Shop: Combining performance and installation Klose’s piece is a comment on the commercial nature of contemporary culture. Staffed throughout the exhibition, a selection of kitsch merchandise is also available for purchase.
  • Zoom, How Might we Design Our Future City?: A wall of cue cards presents ideas from designers, academics and entrepreneurs on how Melbourne can be improved as a city. Each card features a barcode that can be scanned to document visitors’ choices on how the city can be improved. Over time the results are revealed, highlighting the role that individuals play in contributing to the future of a city.
  • Darren Sylvester, For You: Through an illuminated dance floor accompanied by dark lighting and immersive sound Sylvester explores the idea of overcoming an individual’s fear of embarrassment. The dance floor’s colour palette was inspired by a popular make up brand.

‘Melbourne Now’ is an ambitious project that represents a new direction for the National Gallery of Victoria in terms of its scope and its relationship with audiences. The exhibition is an immersive, inclusive and participatory exhibition experience, providing a rich and compelling insight into Melbourne’s art, design and cultural practice at this moment.

‘Melbourne Now’ is on display until Sunday 23 March 2014 is on display at The Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia and NGV International, Melbourne, Australia.
