JR and New York City Ballet
Acclaimed artist JR has been invited by the New York City Ballet (NYCB) to create a large-scale installation for their Art Series.
For his NYCB Art Series creation, JR has photographed more than eighty Ballet’s dancers, using their images to then create a large-scale installation that will be displayed in various areas of the theatre. The centrepiece of the installation is an enormous image, over 600 square metres in size, featuring all of the dancers, which will be displayed in the theatre’s Promenade.
The collaboration with JR marks the second installation in the NYCB’s Art Series. Conceived in 2013, the Art Series features annual collaborations between NYCB and contemporary visual artists who create original works inspired by NYCB. The inaugural season of the series featured a collaboration with the Brooklyn-based artist collective FAILE.
NYCB will hold three special Art Series performances on Thursday 23 January, Friday 7 February and Thursday 13 February 2014. Audience members attending each of these performances will receive a limited-edition commemorative piece of art created by JR for the occasion.
