Zona MACO 2014
Latin America’s most significant international exhibition of contemporary art, Zonamaco México Arte Contemporáneo (Zona MACO), will return to Mexico City for its 11th edition.
A selection of 115 galleries from 21 different countries will descend on the Mexican capital, working toward the fair’s main aim: To instil a culture of art collecting in Mexico. The ongoing initiative will see the Zona MACO place a focus on featuring a selection of ‘affordable art pieces’.
Along with a primary section of experienced international galleries, a further four sections will showcase emerging and contemporary art and design. Sections include are:
– New Proposals: A selection of international galleries that will present individual projects by artists under the age of 35. This year special priority is being given to artists living and working in Latin America, or those whose work is inspired and informed by the geographic area.
– Zona MACO Sur: The section seeks to affirm power of a work of art to encourage viewers to reflect on society. The selection is based on diverse ways in which works of art indicate our ways of being and of seeing, and how these inform and transform our social and political habits.
– Modern Art: Presented for the second year running, this section will focus on international modern art from the first half of the twentieth century.
– Design: For the third year, Zona MACO will feature a design section, in which the work of studios and galleries in Mexico and the United States are presented. The aim is to create partnerships between industries, designers, international galleries and artists to produce limited editions of utilitarian objects.
With the edition, Zona MACO is noted for giving a twist to the traditional skull used as the fair’s logo. Karmen Orta at Cadena+Asociados Branding, led the design for this edition. His main inspiration was the Huichol art, which sought to rescue characteristic elements such as ornamental tradition and the mixture of colours to give birth to a skull with key elements of Mexico.
Zona MACO takes place at the Centro Banamex, Mexico City, Mexico from Wednesday 5 – Sunday 9 February 2014.
