Maiko Takeda: Atmospheric Reentry
Maiko Takeda’s Atmospheric Reentry collection started from the simple question of what it would feel like to wear a cloud.
A milliner and jewellery designer, Takeda has created a series of sculptural head/body pieces that blur the boundaries of surrounding space for the wearer, seeking to transcend the traditional expectations of headwear. Takeda’s interest lies in creating ethereal adornments to the body. Environmental influences such as shadow, wind and gravity create an experience of wonder for the wearer.
The collection’s aesthetic is inspired by the futuristic mood of Robert Wilson’s 1976 production of Philip Glass’ opera ‘Einstein on the Beach’. Takeda saw the production in 2012 during its reproduction in London.
Takeda favours the use of unconventional materials, with each piece a careful assembly of hundreds of spiky feather-like units. The headpieces are constructed from clear acrylic discs, colour-gradient tinted film and silver jump rings, which fan out to achieve a density and lightness of the form that surround the wearer in an brightly-coloured, luminescent haze.
Atmospheric Reentry is on display at Joyce Gallery, Paris until Saturday 22 March 2014 and features new unseen additions to the collection.
